The motors of radio controlled
boats are powered by electric,
gas, or nitro fuel. However,
don't be fooled by the
misconceptions that an electric RC
boat is the slowest. In fact,
some of the new brushless
electric motor radio controlled
boats are really fast and can
even be faster than some gas
powered boats.
Most of us like speed in our
boats, and if that sounds like you, then you will want to look for either
the hydroplane or catamaran hull configurations. These have proven
themselves to be the fastest of the various models.
For beginners, most of the radio
controlled boats will seem to go fast, particularly with the correct power
system and proper tweaking. And also for beginners, one should keep in mind
that the gas powered controlled boats are a little bit more difficult to
maintain and also require a bit more talent and skill to control than electric
powered boats.
Electric radio controlled boats
are the most economical of the
different types of boats, not
costing as much as comparable
gas or nitro boats. Pay special
attention to the scale model
replicas of real, full-sized
watercraft, as these are the
most popular of all the models.

RADIO CONTROLLED BOATS
FOR THE RC ENTHUSIAST
When
it comes to choosing what kinds of radio controlled boats you want to
own and operate, you should look at your choices based on your needs
and your experience. Of course, you know that your choices boil down
to electric or gas/nitro. But, it you will be honest when answering
these questions, you will be guided toward the appropriate boat
choice for you.
Speed or Luxury?
First,
what do you want out of your boating sessions? Do you want an RC
Boat to cruise around in calm waters? Maybe you have ideas of a
water course or route that will test your driving abilities. Or,
your idea of a good time is mere speed, speed, and more speed. You
may want to be running the loudest unit around, or you may want to
be a very quiet, environmentally friendly water user. The sort of
user you are will give you a good starting point for your choices in
radio controlled boats.
Rough or Smooth?
Where
are you going to operate your boat? Throughout the country, there
are any number of bodies of water that have their own unique
characteristics. You may be using your boat in a neighborhood pond
that is mostly calm. Conversely, you may have to use your radio
controlled boats in a larger body of water and have to deal with
rough surfaces and wind and the like most of the time. You may be
using a very public location with constant competition for space.
Your choice is at least partially driven by your water. You may be
in an area with severe restrictions. Make sure you know the local
codes that you are subject to.
Old Hat or Newbie?
Have
you ever owned an RC boat before, or is this your first
one? Some radio controlled boats require more skill to operate than others. In
particular, the gas/nitro boats have to be refueled and kept in
tune, which takes a different skill set than electric boats. These
preparation and in-use requirements are part of the boating
experience. However, you may not want to deal with some of the
issues involved with one or the other type of boat.
Here
is a tip. If you have not owned a radio controlled boat or other
type vehicle before, you may want to start with an inexpensive RC
car. Then, once you get used to the controller, the timing, and the
remote handling skills, you can step up to the more expensive controlled boats.
Most real enthusiasts own several models and types of radio
controlled boats anyway; so, for your land, water, and air enjoyment
you may want to have several different type models.
Radio
controlled boats, and other RC models (helicopters, cars, flying
dinosaurs, flying bugs, etc.) can give you enjoyment in any weather,
in any conditions, and in just about any place. As an enthusiast,
you just need to have the various models to use whenever the urge
presents itself. For most of us, that occurs every day and twice on
the weekend.
